The Issue With Fast Fashion?

Fast fashion is causing issues such as climate change, ocean life depletion, pollution, and waste. As someone who has grown up to love clothing; the idea of shopping and wearing a variety of clothes as a child had never shocked my privileged mind of how overconsumption could grow into a large issue in our world. Around two years ago, I became informed about the issues of fast fashion, which influenced me to fix my issue of overconsumption. There is a large misconception of fast fashion that everyone should not buy fast fashion however, there must be an understanding that people cannot just drop everything to stop buying fast fashion as those people may not be able to afford ethical brands. When it comes to thrifting and second-hand, it is more challenging to find sizes dedicated to what certain people may need. The main point of being ethical is that any action or person can make a difference because many can follow this cycle and it can grow to a larger amount of people being more sustainable. Advocating is a huge factor of change that I want to continue working towards being a part of. Those who can afford to switch the way they consume are crucial to our society, we are beginning to see the underlying problems in our world which are rising temperatures and natural disasters appearing more often. Workers' rights are being violated in the fashion industry. Garment labours and child labours are a large issue as they are paid so little for the work, they do in such unsafe conditions that contain damaging chemicals and violence. We need to speak on behalf of workers, animals and our environment because soon enough it will be too late. We can advocate for ethical standards, start to vote with our dollar, and minimize our consumption of fast fashion which can allow companies and corporations to give us what we want, Ethicalness. As consumers, it is not our fault we have been misled by companies but for us to fix this issue, we must research into companies to know if they are being sustainable, paying workers a reasonable amount with safe conditions, safe and non-toxic chemicals, and renewable energy.
