How Fashion shows us as individuals

Updated: May 26, 2022

I believe everyone has heard something like a boy's colour is blue and that a girl's colour is pink. Society's standards for people to dress a certain way makes it extremely complicated for people to be who they want to be. These society standards are absurd and ridiculous. This is where self-expression takes a complicated turn in play. Currently and even for decades, society has lured us into wanting to look “on trend”. To be “cool” and “fit in.” If we choose not to follow society's rules we can be seen as someone “not stylish” or “weird” what society is doing here is completely reckless and cruel, we are simply humans looking for an outlet to show what we like and who we are and none of this can be done when society puts us down in these extremely negative ways. The trend cycle has become a toxic cycle for the planet, consumers, and society. We are pushed by society to follow these trends and once something goes “out of trend” we are forced to not wear it or feel that we cannot wear it again. This creates massive waste, and it forces people to have to constantly change their whole wardrobe just to fit in. Throughout our lives, we continuously are changing our appearance or in a way that our identity begins to blossom into our unique selves. In 2022, we are changing the norm of gendered clothing and allowing people to wear what they want without the unnecessary judgements that are enforced by society. I could say appearance does not matter and that no one will care what you look like but, I believe it does. Why not show who you are through your clothes, it is a wonderful way to express your feelings and emotions you could possibly be feeling. Even just sharing a part of you that you want people to see. Through clothing we see your identity meaning possible aspects of culture and how you identify as. When you dress for yourself and enjoy what you wear that is all that matters because knowing you feel good is all the confidence you need in showing your true self. I also believe that fashion is an outlet for mental health because when we put on that outfit and feel good, we can have a change in mood and can notice that our mood has lifted.
